1. The smell of the raw material
Generally, the construction of
diapers is divided into three layers.
(1) An surface layer: the materials of the surface layer are mainly non-woven fabrics, which are non-toxic and tasteless. In other words, the peculiar smell of
diapers has nothing to do with non-woven fabrics.
(2) Absorbent core (the inner-most layer of the diaper): it typically consists of a blend of cellulose fluff pulp and sodium polyacrylate granules which belongs to the superabsorbent polymer. And they characterize odorless and tasteless. If the diaper is made from wood pulp cores, it will give you the scent of trees.
(3) Backsheet (the water-resistant outer layer of the diaper): the breathable polyethylene (PE) backsheet mainly prevents liquids from penetrating through the diaper and leaking outside. Polyethylene is odorless and nontoxic, with excellent low temperature resistance and good chemical stability, which means PE has no unpleasant smell.
Thus, if the peculiar smell comes from the raw materials of
diapers, the "suspects" may be the polyethylene backsheet and the absorbent core. But these are harmless to the health of the baby.
2. The smell of disinfectant
High temperature sterilization, ozone sterilization or ultraviolet sterilization of diapers is needed in the production process. In addition, the diaper production line will also be regularly shut down for cleaning and disinfection. Therefore,
diapers packaged directly without ventilation in the factory may have some residual odor.
3. The smell of glue
In the production of
diapers, there must be several glue spraying and frictioning processes. The adhesive used in
diapers is melt adhesives, which belong to hot melt pressure sensitive adhesives. The safety and quality are guaranteed, and there is no impact on the baby.
However, it is not excluded that some manufacturers adopt some unqualified glue. Thus, choose big brands and products produced by reliable factories.
In a nutshell, the diaper with the newer production date is more likely to have smells. After the package is opened, the smell will become lighter and lighter and is absolutely harmless to the baby.
